Hampton Downs Motorsport Park has already managed to secure a top international event even though it is still in construction.

The circuit south of Auckland has won the rights to host a round of the Superbike World Championship for three years from 2010. Motorcycling New Zealand president Sandra Perry says there is still plenty of hard work to be done before the championship arrives. Perry says the series organisers have accepted the bid provided their terms can be met and they now have to find the funding for the event, which is quite a substantial amount.

It will be the first time the Superbikes have been in New Zealand since 1992, when they raced at Manfeild. Perry says the Superbike World Championship was initially a New Zealand concept so they are very excited about having it return.

The round is proposed to be held in early March after the Phillip Island event in Australia which would mean that motorsport fans would be able to go to Phillip Island in Australia one weekend, Hampton Downs the next and then Hamilton for the V8 Supercars soon after.
